Where the money goes
A month in Bangkok is one of the better-value city stays in Asia if you resist the mall gravity. Monthly rentals and serviced studios run 15,000 to 28,000 baht, which undercuts almost any European capital for the same comfort. Eating like a local, 40 to 80 baht a plate at food halls and street stalls, keeps the daily food spend absurdly low by UK standards.
What to watch
Where a month-long trip budget diverges from a resident's is movement and treats. You will do more Grab rides, more weekend markets, more rooftop bars and at least a couple of big day trips, so we carry 4,000 to 10,000 baht for tours, nights out and misc, plus a heavier transport line of 2,000 to 4,000 baht. Is a monthly rental better than a hotel for a month?
Usually, yes. Serviced monthly rates start around 15,000 baht against hotel nights that can double that for equivalent space, and monthly rentals usually include a kitchen and laundry. Book two or three weeks of accommodation ahead, then walk into condo buildings and negotiate the rest on the ground.
What should a UK traveller not skimp on in Bangkok?
Travel insurance and tap water caution, then aircon. Private hospital treatment is excellent and billed accordingly, so the 700 to 1,200 baht a month insurance line pays for itself the once you need it. Beyond that, spend on the things Bangkok does uniquely well, river transport and street food, and skip the generic tourist-markup stuff.
