Where the money goes
Chiang Mai is the original nomad city and still one of the cheapest credible bases in Asia. A one-bed with a proper workspace in Nimman or the old city runs 9,000 to 18,000 baht, cafes are excellent and cheap by Bangkok standards, and the coworking and gym culture means the extras line of 4,000 to 8,000 baht goes a long way. Full nomad budget: roughly 27,000 to 53,000 baht, about 605 to 1,195 pounds.
What to watch
The trade-offs are connectivity and season. Direct international flights are thinner than Bangkok's, and burning season, roughly February to April, is a real productivity and health issue: many nomads schedule the bad months elsewhere. Internet reliability in newer buildings is fine; in older cheap rooms it is a lottery, so check before signing.
Practical notes
Coffee deserves its own line in Chiang Mai because it is where nomad budgets quietly die: the western food and coffee line of 3,500 to 8,000 baht assumes you are honest about how many 90-baht flat whites you actually drink. Cook some breakfasts and the whole budget drops a tier.

Nimman or the old city for a nomad base?
Nimman if you want cafes, coworking and gyms within a five-minute scooter ride, at a modest rent premium. The old city is quieter, cheaper and prettier but thinner on workspace options. Many nomads split the difference in Santitham, which prices between the two.
How do nomads handle burning season?
Most plan around it. February to April is when the smoke sits over the valley, so nomads who stay buy purifiers and N95s, and many simply relocate for those months, to the islands, Bangkok or abroad. Build that into an annual plan rather than a monthly one, because it is the one predictable disruption.
