Is Chiang Mai cheaper than Phuket?
Yes, for most expats and digital nomads. Chiang Mai has cheaper rentals, cheaper local food, more budget cafes and a deeper low-cost long-stay scene. Phuket has beach proximity, island transport and global tourism demand pushing costs up.
Phuket can be controlled if you live inland and avoid resort habits. But if you want the Phuket people picture in their heads, you usually pay the beach premium.
Digital nomad fit
Chiang Mai is easier for work routines: cafes, coworking, rentals, gyms, language schools and low-friction daily life. Phuket is better if the workday is built around beach, sea, higher-end social life and outdoor spending.
The Coffee Index matters here. Cafe culture is now a real budget line. Chiang Mai still gives more value than Phuket if you work from cafes every day.
Who should choose which
Choose Chiang Mai if you want a serious base with lower burn rate. Choose Phuket if lifestyle is the product and you are comfortable paying for it.
The practical test is one month in each with the same budget. Phuket will usually feel better on weekends; Chiang Mai will usually feel better on the spreadsheet.
