This guide has been rebuilt into the current The Baht format and checked on 23 May 2026. It keeps the practical planning focus while pointing readers toward newer live-rate, visa, banking and transfer pages where those are more current.

The core trade-off

Chiang Mai gives you infrastructure, community and routine. Krabi gives you limestone scenery, beaches, islands and a more holiday-shaped version of Thailand.

For a short stay, Krabi can be the obvious emotional winner. For a twelve-month budget, Chiang Mai often has the easier numbers.

Cost and convenience

Krabi costs rise around tourist areas, transport, western food and island movement. Chiang Mai has a deeper local market for rentals, cafes, coworking and everyday services.

Healthcare and specialist services are also easier to plan in Chiang Mai. Krabi is workable, but more serious needs may point you toward Phuket, Bangkok or another larger centre.

Who should choose which

Choose Chiang Mai if you want a base. Choose Krabi if the beach and outdoor setting are the point of the move and you accept the practical trade-offs.

The best test is seasonal. Krabi in wet season and Chiang Mai in smoke season are the versions you need to understand before choosing.
