Is Pattaya cheaper than Bangkok?
For rent, often yes. Pattaya and Jomtien still offer a broad condo market where a retiree can live near the sea for less than a comparable central Bangkok unit. Bangkok has more local depth, but the expat corridors can be expensive.
The trap is lifestyle. Pattaya makes beach bars, western food, taxis and nightlife easy. Bangkok makes malls, restaurants, delivery apps and convenience easy. Both cities punish careless spending; they just do it differently.
Bangkok vs Pattaya on daily life
Bangkok wins on BTS/MRT, hospitals, flights, embassies, work, schools, shopping and serious city infrastructure. It is the better base if you need appointments, travel, business or specialist healthcare.
Pattaya wins on coastal access, condo availability, golf, Bangkok road access and an older foreign-resident ecosystem. If you want practical retirement rather than capital-city energy, Pattaya can be easier.
Who should choose which
Choose Bangkok if access and infrastructure matter most. Choose Pattaya if you want a coastal expat base and can manage the temptation band.
For many British retirees, the strongest setup is Pattaya or Jomtien as the base, Bangkok as the backup for flights, hospitals and paperwork.
